This could be the strongest cold wave I've seen since i've lived here. So this is pretty noteworthy. Then again, we will see how it materializes.

relative to average and it being late in the winter this looks like a very impressive cold blast

That's exactly the point.

Reminds me also of late February / early March 2005. I was living in Lyon at the time and the temp fell at -10c on March 1st at night and it snowed again a few days later, in a very snowy winter (by our standards). Late march it was already 20c in the afternoon. -10c probably happens once every 5 years or so*, so having it on the first day of meteorological spring was particularly impressive.

* Actually, it happened also in early 2003 and early 2006 if I'm not mistaken. The mid-2000s were a great decade for cold winters in Europe, especially after the zonal 90s.

About time Europe gets some cold, was starting to feel like a sub-tropic area.

How is this being "over hyped"? A very cold spell is now certain, no one said it will be record breaking, but it could be the coldest weather the UK has seen for a few years...

Because they are making it sound worse than 2010 and other really bad freezes like 2012. It isn't even as bad as either of those two winters.

You have to take what you can get. Frankly it's impressive that they are getting this cold, I could have never foreseen this after all the mild winters Western Europe got recently. Maybe a sign of a pattern change?
