Not much snow at Portillo this year -I thought we were having a lame season at my local area, but it still has 3X the snow base of Portillo.

Got some new skis turning up in the next day or so, will be making a visit up there shortly.

Been talking to a friend who has been working in one of the higher civilized parts (Tophouse junction)of the region, at around 800 metres. He said there is still a bit snow on the ground since it fell about two weeks ago, and it was cold enough for water pipes on his concrete truck to freeze during the day, on some days.

A wet and stormy day here today, with the skies looking thundery.

Looks like a good ski season in Australia, particularly Victoria.

Not a great season in NZ, although the snowiest areas have around a 5 metre base.

The South African weather service(SAWS) issued warnings for disruptive snowfall in the Drakensberg range area, over 40 cm possible in highest grounds.

The cold has killed fish

More than 700kg of dead fish pulled out of Brisbane lake

Quote:
“They [the council] did a number of tests on water quality with regard to the algae, the oxygen levels and a few other tests to make sure the environment wasn't killing the fish, such as poison,” he said.

“They have decided that what has happened is that the temparature of the lake got low enough the tilapia couldn’t survive.”

Good bit of warmth in the south-west corner of Western Australia with perth having highs of 17.0C, 21.4C and 22.4C on the 11th, 12th and 13th respectively. Full sun and high pressure with moderate north/north-easterly winds has propelled the temps into the mid 20s further east. While other towns such as Albany (maximums of 16.9C, 18.8C, 22.3C on the corresponding days), Katanning (12.3C, 15.9C, 19.4C) and Kalgoorlie (14.8C, 19.3C and 23.6C); received plenty of sun, northerlies and warmer weather.

The week ahead for Perth and the lower west:
A cold front will pass through the South-West Land Division tonight and into early tomorrow morning bringing falls from 8-15mm in the Perth area and 1-5mm in the South West district. A high pressure system will form on tuesday bringing seasonable and partly cloudy conditions with just a few showers drifting through the south-coastal and great southern districts. Scattered showers are predicted for Perth from tuesday afternoon to friday afternoon but should be light. A high pressure system to the east will bring light north-easterly winds into the South-West Land Division on saturday and sunday pushing temperatures into the low 20s on saturday and sunday afternoon before a weak cold front drifts through on monday morning bringing scattered showers.

Possibly a crazy amount by Tasmanian standards, but for 10 days, that isn't what I'd call a major snowfall.
