What are your thoughts on temperatures and precipitation levels for the plains and Midwest for this winter Chicagogeorge? Deep cold spells and no snow, deep cold spells with lots of snow, What are your early thoughts at this point?
Really depends. If a Modoki comes along then it's likely to be cold and snow for the Midwest. If ENSO signals are weak then other factors will dominate (AO, NAO, PNA, QBO....) At this point I'm just monitoring the model trends. CFSv2 has been calling for a blowtorch this winter for quite a while, and the JAMSTEC went from a cold winter during its June and July runs, to a blow torch in the Aug run. Let's see what it shows in the newest run which will come out on Sep 20th.

The Euro is in line with Bastardi's Weather Bell forecast for the winter. Cold east and south, warm west.

Just move to Montana and your need will be taken care of royally

Unlike Chicago (presume, from your nick), we actually have proper winters. I grew up in a cold and snowy region, but as the snow has been receding last 3 decades everywhere, I only realized wbat I lost when I came here last October.

if the snow cover also receded here, I just cannot fathom what it must have been like, 30 years ago.

Maybe it didn't. I have yet to meet a Montanan complaining of little snow cover

Yeah yeah yeah..................straight from summer to winter, got it, makes sense since much of the Midwest and a considerable portion of the United States east of the Rockies was jipped out of an actual proper spring season this year, it would make perfect sense if there is no proper fall season either.
