Asheville (Buncombe County) is several degrees cooler than the NC average in summer. It's 2,134 feet in elevation.

I'd look in the Appalachian region above 2,000 feet elevation.

Thanks. I had been looking on the computer around the Mt. Mitchell area but even google doesn't give the elevations of nearby cities / towns. Wanting to buy a summer home in that area; IF I CAN AFFORD IT. Pretty pricey from what I see so far.
Thanks again,
Tim

Boone is at 3500 ft while Highlands is a little higher at 4000 ft. Beech Mountain is around 5000 ft but the town is significantly smaller than Boone and Highlands.

The temperature has never reached 100°F in Boone, and the city averages almost 90" of snow per year.

Boone, NC receives about 35" of snow per year. Mount Mitchell gets about 90", but is over 3000 feet higher.

Must disagree. For a cooler summer, one would need to be higher than 3500' in elevation, preferably closer to 4,000'. But then you would most likely get a bit more snow in the winter over 4,000'. And some tricky roads. There are some posters on here who can give you some first-hand information because they are 'up there'.

Agree with you, QC. Asheville is not the coolest location.

I'd guess the western Great Smokies counties has the coolest, like Clingman's Dome or Mt. LeConte areas.

I'm at 3500 ft in Transylvania and summer temps have yet to go over 83 F.

Yes, and at that altitude, the nights are cooler. Nice.
