At one point, our air conditioner failed (we only had a window unit) and Dad had to buy a new one, but I was staying with some relatives when that happened.

The heat wave of 1980 changed lives. Also, 2011 here in Texas would have been more dangerous without the lessons learned from 1980. Air-conditioning is not optional for rental properties, EMS vehicles have heat related equipment on board, heat stroke prevention is taught in high school health classes, athletes drink much more water during practices, etc.

The year 1980 specifically, not the whole decade, it's right in the thread title

Says 80's that i see. 1980 i had a normal summer with a southeast windflow and normal rain. But hot like every summer is in FL. Opps i was looking at another thread in a telescope forum at the same time and got em mixed up. I don't remember a heat wave dave in 1980.

You're lucky you had a window unit. I still don't know how we survived without A/C in the past. I remember using wet towels and losing a lot of sleep.

As far as 1980, nothing crazy here. June was below normal, July-August wasn't crazy. I think it was confined to the south?

I checked Jackson, Mississippi and WOW! Keep in mind normal max temp is 90s there so what do you call a heat wave?

but here is June 1980 Jackson, MS. The crazy Pattern started kicking in end of June.

July 1980. Hottest July on Record still. 14 days (about half the month) in the 100s! Previous record was 6 in 1969. Blew it away.

August 1980

September 1980. Hottest September on record still. had 9 more days in the 100s! A record again. 1980 still holds the record for most days in the 100s at 29!

The Red and Blue are simply just the Max and Min for the month

I was living in San Francisco, which usually has cool summers.
Was that the year it got so hot that the trolley tracks expanded, stopping the trolleys and blocking all traffic?

Looking at SFO's data man 1980s came up a lot as far as highest max temp for the month. What a decade that was. Probably no coincidence that it was the least snowiest decade for here. Luckily we changed after that decade. lol

San Fran Record Highest Max Temps

April: 92° in 1989

May: 87° in 1984

June: 98° in 1989

July: 99° in 1985

August: 99° in 2010, 98° in 1968

September: 104° in 2017, 103° in 1971, 100°in 1984

October: 99° in 1987
