I'm curious what it takes to shut things down in your region for winter weather? Is your area 'soft' or 'tough'? How often do things shut down and what's the longest you recall? Also on the other side are you ever surprised of things NOT being shut down when they should?

Also if anyone is in a region where it's pretty tough what's it like? Does the media still do their 'yellow journalist' tactics to freak people out?

Very soft, 1 day of moderate snow gets a lot of people in a panic because they aren’t prepared for it. Not many people switch to winter tyres here so driving anywhere becomes an instant chore.

We haven’t really had any longer spells of snowy weather since the winters or 2009/10 & 2010/11 which caused a lot of the schools to shut for weeks and widespread disruption.

The ‘Beast from the East’ in Feb 2018 brought a lot of snow in the space of a couple of days but had melted away once it warmed up a few days later.

We don’t see enough snow or significantly below freezing temperatures here to shut everything down but the media would have you believe it’s the end of the world when it does happen.

In February 2012 in my town was a collapse when it was fell 50 cm of snow and temperatures were in deep minus most of the month, Danube river near my town was frozen.
Also, in January 2017 was very cold but with little snow only 8-9 cm, and Danube again was frozen large part of the month.
In both months Feb 2012 and Jan 2017 some people were crossing frozen Danube. It was attractive for them, no matter what they risk their lives.

Same was on Danube near my town as on this video of frozen Danube in Belgrade on January 15, 2017.

it can slow a lot here sometimes. If we only get like a few inches it slows things down, but no blocking for sure, until it gets to one foot maybe. It depends also on how the weather is planned in advance. Some freak events can be more harmful, like in mid-november 2017 when we got one foot of snow. But a normal planned dusting of 5cm in december ? nothing special.

All it takes is a few snowflakes and all the Karen mom get on social media demanding schools to be closed.

You know the country has hit a new low when the school boards are run by the parents.
