May Summary 2020

May was an interesting month, with a strong frontal system from the 4th-7th that heralded an early and wet start to winter...which did not eventuate and instead lead to 16 rainless, cloudless days in a row (okay that's a slight lie there was 1 partly cloudy day :P ). This extended dry spell was dominated by warmth from the 12th-15th and cooler yet sunny days 16th-21st. We had a brief warm spell on the 22nd and 23rd with some nice late Spring weather before a series of strong fronts arrived the 24th-29th. That period had 88.2mm fall at Jandakot! Overall although it was dominated by sunny weather and I would remember it as a sunny month; it had fairly average sun, slightly cooler than average and wet.

Jandakot:
Highest Max: 28.5C (3rd)
Mean Max: 21.8C (-0.2C)
Lowest Max: 16.3C (6th)

Sun Hours: 216.2
Sun hours/day: 7.0 (+0.1 hours/day)

Perth Metro:
Highest Max: 28.9C (3rd)

Monthly Anomaly: -0.6C

Highest Min: 16.9C (4th)
Mean Min: 9.6C (-0.9C)
Lowest Min: 4.6C (19th and 21st)

Rain: 111.6mm (128.5% of average 86.8mm)

Unlike Western Europe, there were no warm anomalies here, on the contrary, it was colder than usually.

May 2020 here was 2.4c below average, the second decade of the month was especially cold, the coldest second decade of May since 1960.

Another flop of a month with almost no rain at all while south FL had 10"+. Temps wise nothing crazy hot. Not even close to May 1995 that started out with 94 to 98f day after day.

Weirdest month of May in my 20 years living in the Toronto area. Toronto saw both its second coldest May low in history and second coldest May daytime high in history. After the polar vortex's lengthy visit, we had one week of spring weather, then we fast forwarded straight into summer before cooling down last weekend.

Average High: 17.3C
Average Low: 6.8C

Maximum High: 31.0C (May 26)
Minimum Low: -4.7C (May 9) (!!!)

5 Hottest Days (By Daytime High):
1. 31.0C (May 26)
2. 30.3C (May 25)
3. 28.4C (May 27)
4. 25.9C (May 24)
5. 25.7C (May 29)

5 Coldest Days (By Lowest Daytime High):
1. 4.8C (May 8)
2. 6.8C (May 9)
3. 7.8C (May 11)
4. 8.2C (May 10)
5. 8.6C (May 12)

Total Precipitation: 43.2mm
Total Rain: 40.0mm
Total Snow: 3.2cm (!!!)

Rainiest Day: 10.8mm (May 18)

Max temp was just 88. Still haven't hit 90 at KPDK (though we did at our lake house)
Avg max was 77.3 which is just .2 degrees higher than the coolest set back in 2005.
Min max was 61 which is tied for 4th coolest. Amazingly, it happened mid May, not early May. That day was one of the latest cold air "wedges" coming down the eastern Appalachians I can remember. Low was only 53.

Warmest night was 67 which actually happened a few times. In fact, from the 13th onward we didn't get below 50 and rarely below 60.
Avg min was 55 which was in large part due to a string of 40s early in the month. I know at our lake house we had 14 nights that were 60 or above.
Coldest temp was 37 which set a record.

Nothing too out of the ordinary this May for here. There were a lot of forecasts calling for rain/thunderstorms everyday this month, but most of the time it went away and only rained for two days out of the week or so. There were quite a few cloudy days however.

Corvallis, Oregon taken at Hyslop Field north of town.

Ave Max 69.0 (20.6) +2.0 (about 1.1)
Ave min 45.7 (7.6) +1.7 (0.9+)
Precipitation 3.16 (80.3 mm) +0.81 (20.6)

Warmer than average and wetter than average. We alternated regularly between cold and damp and warm and dry with the warm/dry barely beating out the cold/wet.
The only excitement was a thunderstorm that roared through the early hours of May 30 dropping about 0.4 to 0.6 inches but waking up the neighborhood with a pretty impressive light show and lots of thunder. We get these things occasionally in the Pacific Northwest, but this one was unusually strong.
Moving forward to June...The Climate Prediction Center doesn't hold out a lot of hope we'll have much of one. I'm looking at a lot of blah, a little cooler and a fair bit wetter than average. We'll see.
