It's freakin' cold here in SE Alaska, about as cold as it ever gets. Forecast to be around zero in a few days.

Mostly cloudy. Isolated snow showers early in the morning. Highs in the mid 20s. Northeast winds around 10 mph.

Nobody used the term Polar Vortex in the past. Very loosely used today.

And reason why surface got hit with record cold was the same back then. Warming of the stratosphere broke the vortex up and sent the lobes south to mid latitudes.

Sigh.....

No such thing as a "polar vortex". Just like naming winter storms, both are marketing devices to get people to tune in to the Weather Channel.
