It's freakin' cold here in SE Alaska, about as cold as it ever gets. Forecast to be around zero in a few days.

Nobody used the term Polar Vortex in the past. Very loosely used today.
And reason why surface got hit with record cold was the same back then. Warming of the stratosphere broke the vortex up and sent the lobes south to mid latitudes.
