You know what's nuts, I don't ever remember seeing this... The square snowflakes = moderate and heavy snow. Look at those stations reporting it, meanwhile nothing falling from the sky. That's snow falling from the winds blowing it. I usually see it localized in like North Dakota. lol Interesting to see this large area. That's how crazy the winds are
Well the cold ended up hitting harder than forecast while the snow ended up being lighter. Went from raining at dawn to -15C at dusk. A couple days ago the forecast only called for a low of -10C, and even this morning they were only forecasting a low of -12C tonight, so it's already a few degrees colder. On the snow front though, it seems like it's mostly just the wind blowing snow around with little snow coming down, and I'm not even sure we got 1cm of accumulation. Will take some pictures tomorrow to see how much we wound up getting.
However, even if Oakville won't be getting much of a white Christmas (probably barely meeting the 1cm requirement), I will be spending the weekend in Montreal where they'll have considerably more.
Will this thread be discussing the next weeks warm temperatures as much?
For example, for the record cold of the present two days, Memphis is in the 60s with lows in the 50s for much of the coming week.
Probably not quite as much. Exceptional winter warmth is just normal late fall/early spring weather so it's not as exciting as exceptional winter cold which we only experienced in much more limited quantities year round. I'd expect extreme summer heat waves would similarly generate more discussion.
7:45pm 14° feels like 1°. Was 57° this morning. No snow though.
This is a really interesting meteorological event many will never forget!
Current upper level heights. Center of the Vortex is now over NY state. LARGE vortex and inside it is the coldest airmass we seen in decades for December. Trough digging south.
Feels like this.
