Disgusting slop weather, 35-40F with damp chill, rain, pitch dark gray skies. Can’t buy any snow, dry air, cold, or sun with this above average pattern in the eastern US.

For New Iberia Airport a December 29 first frost is a great showing.

As of today Gainesville Airport's coldest forecasts have been revised to 2C. With the comparative ripoff places in mind, Gainesville Airport's tiptop performance is all the more phenomenal.
Looks like most of the cold was confined to Louisiana this morning. Houma got down to 33 F. Oh well. George Bush will be monitored again tonight.

Thanks for the reminder about Houma. The weather.gov/lix page won't load for me but I thought it got its first frost back in the November 2 cold front?
I'd love to be proven wrong though, can't have too many good Louisiana performances to compensate the March 20 ripoffs.

If Houston George Bush Airport can get past tonight, it might stand a chance at putting the cherry on top of everything. The all time latest first frost is January 11 2016, imagine if they tie or beat that record right on the heels of tying the all-time earliest!

Well, we'll see if it's different now that I'm in Wellington County, but in Oakville it felt like there was a difference. February often had more snow cover than December, but February was also colder and more snowy. However, if temperatures and snow depth were equal, it seemed to take longer for snow to melt in December.

Temps to remain above average over the next 10 days but not as dramatically so for the most part as they have been

We aren't alone in the snow drought

We'll see if things change in the 8-14 day period.

I wonder if this winter will be a variant on last winter. 2022-2023 had mild temperatures until February, which had a bit of cold (mainly at the start of the month), and was the coldest month, but still above average, and then March wound up being near average, snowier and almost as cold as February.

Mean temps Oakville TWN vs Oakville WPCP (1981-2000 avg)
Nov 2022: 43.2F (+4.0F)
Dec 2022: 32.0F (+2.3F)
Jan 2023: 31.3F (+7.8F)
Feb 2023: 31.3F (+6.3F)
Mar 2023: 33.1F (+0.9F)
Apr 2023: 48.0F (+4.5F)
Cool half avg: 36.5F (+4.3F)

Mean temps Fergus Shand Dam vs Fergus (1981-2010 avg)
Nov 2022: 38.1F (+2.3F)
Dec 2022: 27.5F (+2.5F)
Jan 2023: 27.1F (+8.4F)
Feb 2023: 24.4F (+3.7F)
Mar 2023: 29.3F (+0.7F)
Apr 2023: 44.4F (+2.1F)
Cool half avg: 31.8F (+3.3F)

bonus... average snow depth in Fergus
Nov 2022: 0.8"
Dec 2022: 1.7"
Jan 2023: 1.9"
Feb 2023: 3.6"
Mar 2023: 6.0"
Apr 2023: 0"

So far this year in Fergus
Nov 2023: 34.9F (-0.9F)
Dec 2023: 33.6F (+8.6F)

Average snow depth Fergus
Nov 2023: 0.4"
Dec 2023: 0.2"

Looks like January 2024 probably won't be as ridiculously warm as in 2023, but still warmer than average, and we got a very warm Dec 2023 instead.

I'm beginning to think that January will be closer to normal with a strong cold shot in the middle of the month and then a thaw as the MJO moves towards warm phases. February could be the coldest month as by the El Nino would have weakened more.

This looks like a DEEP cold shot. Too bad its on the GFS and out in the fantasy range

but the ECMWF ensembles show something similar. Maybe not as cold but...

Wow. Not even 9 PM yet and Gainesville Airport is already at 40 F! Let's see how low they go tonight!

It was absurd to see how uniform the high temperatures were across such a large part of the country today due to the zonal flow.

Oh my. Unlike the weather.gov forecast the Google forecast predicts that that 4C is going to stay consistent all night and morning, I don't buy that at all because there will be clear and calm periods but it is probably a good indication that tomorrow will not be the first frost yet.

Like you said, we'll see. Though I have to say that I have a little surprise for 2024 regarding Gainesville Airport that you would love to know about, only 2 days and a few hours left until I can tell you.
