The shift of the pattern in the US will be to get rid of the constant flood of Pacific air into southern Canada via the stronger Chinook winds. There will be a big reversal of much colder air into those areas in the next 5-10 days.

Happy New Year to everyone reading this comment!

Bulloch, the time has come to give you your 2024 Gainesville Airport surprise. As much as I want this record to be broken by years like 2024 and onward, as my accomplice in Southeast US weather monitoring you deserve to know that Gainesville Airport's 2023 is the best year of Southeast US weather monitoring I have ever firsthand monitored.

The nomination wasn't an easy one, but it comes down to:

-the perfectly-timed near record last frost (January 28 2023 is an ideal date to tie the second-earliest-ever January 28 2003 last frost)
-the near record-long frost-free season extending into the next year like the January 18 2022 record I began my Gainesville monitoring with
-the massive amounts of above normal heat, especially during monitoring season
-the generous extra precipitation (I always thought 1.2m-ish was too dry for North Florida)
-the overall weather monitoring being so good even though so many other Southeast US places got ripped off

Charleston Airport was close competition thanks to getting lucky many times, the longest ever frost free season, and how phenomenal a January 28 last frost is relative to its averages, but what kept Gainesville on top was all that heat. Nothing Charleston Airport had in 2023 equaled weather the >26C average highs in 2 winter months and 32C in November.

I'd love to hear what your best 2023 Southeast US monitoring site was.

It's been a nationwide torch, but Thompson was the hottest spot in Canada this month relative to averages, with a more than 18F anomaly.

Thompson MB December 2023
Avg High: 21.6F (+17.8F)
Avg Low: 3.4F (+18.5F)

Or maybe that area in the NW of the Arctic Archipelago - unfortunately the Isachsen station is missing data for the last 2/3 of the month, but Mould Bay is only missing one day.

Mould Bay December 2023
Avg High: 1.4F (+18.0F)
Avg Low: -13.0F (+16.2F)

2nd warmest after 2015 in southern Ontario.

First white New Years eve in six years and so far the only one that I can remember happening after having a brown Christmas the week before.

Got a few cm's of snow overnight here. Nice to have a blanket of snow to wake up to for a change.
