Creepy Town, USA - Digital City

Ok, this is kind of weird, but it's on my AOL news page this morning. Is there really such a thing that happened in California? If there is, does anyone know what the actual explanation for it is?

They think it was caused by underground combustion in an oil field that is there. Ventura County hot spot puzzles experts - Los Angeles Times
