Nice!
Toronto gets colder than that 3 out of every 4 winters at least once for a low.
I believe I've seen HIGHS that cold or colder for 2-3 weeks straight.
that's the work of the Chinnook winds coming off the NZ alps
If Melboune had a 3500-4000m tall mountain range to the north and northwest, I think we could get some spectacular temps during the hot dry northerly winds. 50ºC would be plausable IMO.
The Alps arn't responsible for all the heat, not in Central Otago.
For the bolded part there are no sizable places 'North'. Only to the West and East (in the ****ty West Coast towns).
But Heat is heat, doesn't matter where it comes from or how you get it.
Thank you for clarifying that. Guess I was reading too fast and saw the 33 in the year or something. Who knows?
Funny, but if it was me, both would be equally scary.
Dxiweodwo mentioned it's location;
-A LOT FARTHER SOUTH THAN I HAD IMAGINED!
3,300 ft elevation is not high when you're this far west,
since the whole panhandle is known as "The High Planes" or "Llano Estacado"
Lubbock is already in the center of the panhandle, not the northern part.
Of course I'll probably never go there.
Even if I had a mind to live in the Texas desert,
I'd probably want to live at least as far south as Midland/Odessa.

I take it you dislike heat.
For me it does matter because I love it,
Could you find out what makes some places hot in NZ? Please?
Aukland I hear only has an all-time record of 31 C.
(is it's climate heavily modified by the sea?)
Toronto gets that nearly every summer.
I strongly dislike our normal coolish/warmish summer weather.
I'm only prefer highs at 30+ C and lows at 18+ C,
while our summers are roughly 25 C and 15 C
(plus 10-12 C or minus 5-8 C, since it's quite variable here)

Snag, Yukon hit it's low in 1947.
I don't remember the day or month, but I think it was February.
Pelley's Bay is the town or village in Nunavut with the record low windchill.
This happened in 1989. Perhaps because measuring windchill could be a recent phenonmenon.
Again I didn't get the day or month.
*Pelley's Bay only recorded -92 C, not -93 C as a windchill,
so we're not as bad as you all think.
That's equivalent to -133.6 F.

I myself love the heat. In the summer the hotter the better.
Prefer hot summer and cold winters
I'll say about Auckland though it never gets too hot it doesn't get cold either, rarely drops below 8C(46F). But the heat down here is strong.
I'm a tad stretched for time at the moment so I'll exlpain a little later today.

Alexandra for example and alot of Central Otago
low humidity
greatest distance away from the relativly cool ocean
sheltered from cool sea breezes
sheltered from prevailing cooler winds
dark soil type
fohn wind flows, can get plenty of sunshine due to low dewpoints and high country sheltering, dry bare ground heats quickly, fairly low lying and the district is one of the farthest from a coastline in New Zealand
How cold do you like your winters?
In Canada, most people are of the opinion it's not cold if it's above 0 C. (32 F)
(for winter that is)
Nice! At 7 C (44 F) is when I really start to have problems with my fingers and cold.
32F with no wind is quite mild. 32F with wind is an entirely different matter.
44F feels extremely mild, especially with sun.
20s for highs in the winter are good enough for me, and subzero lows with no wind are no problem. Cold doesn't bother me much, and it probably helps that I have Norwegian ancestry.
^^ Do you have the average climate and forecast temps for Alexandra? Jusat curious
Is it the warmest place in NZ during the summer?
Ave temps throughout the year, climate averages from 1971-2001.
Jan (76) 25.8
Feb(78) 21.5
Mar(71) 17.5
Apr(64) 12.4
Jun(54) 7.5
Jul(46) 7.9
Aug(46) 11.4
Sep(53) 15
Oct(59) 17.5
Nov(64) 20.2
Dec(68) 23.1
I'll say its probaly the warmest centre in New Zealand in summer (are always unoffical report of temps in the low 40s) but Metservice doesn't have them in their system at the moment, they only have their weather instruments there but don't have them on their website and do not store averages for them.
Looks like a cracker of the day again there today.
