Temperatures crashed to Arctic levels Tuesday as a severe cold wave rolled across the upper Midwest on the heels of yet another snowstorm, closing schools and making most people think twice before going outside.

Thermometers read single digits early in the day as far south as Kansas and Missouri, where some areas warmed only into the teens by midday.

The bad part of cold spells isn't just the low temps at night, but how darn cold it is in daytime.

We are only supposed to hit "highs" of -10 today and Wednesday.

Oh wow, we've got you beat. We're supposed to hit minus 4 for a high today. Our actual temps during the night are supposed to be brutal though~probably like yours. Our air temps are supposed to be about 24 below. It'll be interesting to see what it'll be like with windchill.

Not good, I feel for you folks! We're getting our share for tonight and tomorrow. This is one time that being lakeside won't help me much!

As Granite says, there is light at the end of the tunnel (not an oncoming train), in the form of 20's for the weekend! Woohoo, I can't wait!

I feel for you guys. Just could not stomach that type of cold weather.

Here in the deep south, we are also experiencing the horrible cold that is moving down.

For us, THIS is seriously cold!!!!

An Arctic cold front will move through the area overnight and give us the coldest blast of cold air for the season. The temperatures will drop off into the teens and 20's for tonight and into the single digits for your Friday morning. Temperatures will recover back into the teens for the most part on your Saturday morning. We will see a slight chance for a few snow showers with the frontal passage overnight. For the most part we will stay mostly on the dry side over the next week or so. For those that are wondering what the record low for Friday morning is . . . . . it is 6 degrees from back in 1972. As of this moment in time I am going for an overnight low of 7. That would put us just a degree shy of breaking the record low temperature.

I hate to factor in wind chills with this....we have not had this type of cold weather in YEARS.

This may sound weird but I kind of wish I could take a short vacation out to Minnesota or Chicago just to experiance the cold, snowy weather. I don't think I've ever felt anything below 10 or 15 degrees, if that. I just cannot image what subzero temps feel like.

I thought our upper single digits for lows and mid 20s for highs was bad, but gee - 40 below? WOW.

Still, even our mid 20s is 20° below average.
