After a spectacularly crap start, the 2nd half of Jan was great! Had 3 consequtive days of 43C+ temps this week. Nights were generally cold, but a few warm nights toward the end of the month helped bump up the average overnight low to normal.

Melbourne City Center

average high ................. 28.7ºC / 84F
average low .................. 16.0ºC / 61F

highest high .................. 45.1ºC / 113F (30th)
lowest high ................... 18.6ºC / 65F (2nd)

highest low ................... 28.7ºC / 84F (29th)
lowest low ..................... 9.2ºC / 49F (3rd)

days over 40ºC .............. 4
days over 35ºC .............. 8
days over 30ºC .............. 12
days over 25ºC .............. 19

nights over 20ºC ............ 5
nights over 15ºC ............ 14

days with rain ................ 1
total rainfall ................... 0.8mm / (1/30th inch)

average daily sunshine ..... 11.4 hours per day
total sunshine ................ 350.7 hours

I'll post the stats for my suburb later. Basically here days were warmer than the city due to less seabreeze influence.

At John Wayne Airport in Orange County, CA, some interesting statistics for Jan 09, which is supposed to be winter rainy season. With these warmer than average temps, I didn't use hardly any heat at home during the month. Most days I had the windows open at least part of the day to let in the comfortable outdoor air, including this morning. We had 10 days in January with max high temp of 80F/26C or higher.

Maximum high temp = 88F/31C.
Average high temp = 72F/23C.
Minimum high temp = 54F/12C.

Maximum low temp = 58F/14C.
Average low temp = 50F/10C.
Minimum low temp = 39C/3C.

Total rainfall, 0.14 inches, or almost nothing. We are in big trouble with lack of rain.

Max wind was 30 mph, max wind gust was 39 mph, average wind was a fairly calm 4 mph. I live higher in the foothills, so max wind and wind gusts were about 10 or 15 mph higher than at the airport. We had 3 days of strong winds from the desert northeast that raised temps way up and dropped the humidity below 30 percent.

Cold and rarely even close to the average of 25! In fact, today was in the low 30's first time since December 29th, over a month, that is how I'll sum up January!
