I think Toronto having a greater Lake influence is partly why our average temps, especially lows, are as mild as they are even with more cloudcover than somewhere like Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Most places in Ontario with less Lake influence seem to have wider day-to-day variations too. Compare a graph of forecast highs of Ottawa with Toronto and it's obvious how much more stable Toronto is.

Yes, proximity of large bodies of water tend to have a big influence on stability of temperatures and how cloudy a place is. Another example is Vancouver which tends to have much more stable weather than a lot of other places in Canada.
In terms of how many hours of sunshine I would like the most, I would say more than 3000. Vancouver's piddly 1900 hours per year just doesn't cut the mustard despite the fact that our summers tend to be more sunny than cloudy. Living here you have to stock up on Vitamin D pills in the winter

Here I am again.... 2,500 - 3,000 hours would be acceptable for me. Any place hot and humid which gets a fairly good thundery season seems to lie in that range. Places sunnier tend to be too dry and more devoid of thunderstorms.

I had been thinking of relocating to Hong Kong until I saw that they only average 1,840 hours of sun a year.

Just a wee update on this month's current sunshine values for major Australian cities (ending 26th):

Perth: 319
Adelaide: 298
Canberra: 285
Hobart 243
Melbourne: 241
Brisbane: 240
Sydney: 186
Darwin: 113

Sydney ranks second - lowest, not surprising given seeing so many cloudy days (Not complaining though )

Running mean max:

Melbourne: 27.2oC
Sydney: 27.6oC

That part of Asia - ie part of "southern" China, northern Vietnam at least -is very cloudy, some areas prob. as low as 1,000.

No chance of Perth beating its 390.6 record then - not enough daylight.

It'll be interesting to take a month end snapshot at end of July or August.
My guess on the ranking (from highest sun to lowest) would be:

1. Darwin
2. Brisbane
3. Sydney
4. Perth
5. Adelaide
6. Canberra
7. Hobart
8. Melbourne

Have had loads of cloudy days in Sydney - the overall total has been propped up by a 4-5 day run of almost clear days....Overall tracking about average though

Ending 28th, 344 hrs.

Going by the forecast of "mostly sunny" for today as well as next 2 days, looks like the record wont be broken, even if clear with an estimated 39 hours, would take the grand total to 383 hrs.

2 days had 6.0 hrs and 8.4 hrs which, if clear, would have pushed the total well over 391 hrs and possibly reached the 400 hours mark for the first time ever.

192 hrs ending 28th. Looking like our cloudiest January since 2006 when 190. 4 sunless days. 9 days < 6 hours. Average is 235 hrs.
