For you United States members, how do you feel about your local NWS reporting station represents your area? Or for you others out of the states, whatever your official reporting station is called.... ??
Our offical reporting station is the Tri-Cities regional airport in northeast Tennessee. Its right in the middle of three Tri-Cities, but its in a rural area and in a rural river valley location off of the interstate. Its NORMALLY 5-10° COOLER there, than most other areas near the metro area. Example, as I type this, we are 72°, but at the airport, 23 miles southwest of here, they are reporting a much cooler 60°.
On the flip side, Knoxvilles official site is the McGee-Tyson airport on the southwest side of Knoxville in an urban area and its often much milder there than the rest of the area.
I wonder how many other "official" reporting stations are really not well representing the average conditions/temperatures of their area?
Anyone else here notice this anywhere, or in their area?
While I think our areas reporting station well represents the areas rainfall well, I dont think it reflects the temperatures well at all and wish it was recorded elsewhere. Set up official readings in all three downtown areas and average that out.
Our official station is in the downtown and represents the entire metro area quite well, although on some summer days the inland suburbs are much warmer, while the reverse is true on winter nights.
