Despite that, I would highly doubt anywhere in Canada has seen temperatures combined with the humidity that Houston has.
We haven't seen temps quite that high,
but relative to how chilly our averages compare to Houston, we've been close.
98 F with a dewpoint of 82 F is easy for us to get once every 5 years.
That makes for a humidity level maybe 55-60%, and a heat index well above 110 F.
*Probably all but the hottest 10% of the days in a regular Houston summer Toronto can experience; the main difference is that it just doesn't last as long.
ColdCanadian and SAB, I think you two underestimate what its like to live full-time in a very hot and muggy place like Houston. Noone in their right mind thinks 100+ degrees and 75 degree dewpoint is "perfect weather"...
You guys need to stop dreaming, and actually live in houston for a year or two. I'd be willing to bet you would dread it no time. Visting and living in those climates are two different things.
54 F (12 C) with a 20 mph wind can make me feel like I'm getting frost-bite in 20 minutes.
This happened in the middle of May, this year!!!
IT'S ONLY BEEN 5 WEEKS SINCE I WAS TOO COLD; PAINFULLY COLD!!!
And I can expect that this will happen again, no later than mid-October.
There is no way that I'd ever forget how ridiculously easy it is for me to get too cold.
That's always in the back of my mind on days that my skin is covered in slime and my head's a little dizzy.
IN FACT IF I LIVED IN HOUSTON, AIR-CONDITIONING WILL OCCASIONALLY "BRUTALIZE" ME ENOUGH THAT I WILL WELCOME "DANGEROUS" HEAT INDEXES!!!
** I'd already be living somewhere like Houston if immigration wasn't such a PITA.
As a northerner, I dread when the temperature goes above 85F
Interesting...
The only thing that I dread was posting on this thread,
and then put down because I don't think like everyone else does.
Seriously though, Houston has a HUGE population...
I can't imagine ALL 3+ million residents are angry over the heat wave.
With a city so large, with such a distinct climate
I believe it's highly-likely that at least a few people have moved there because they like heat...
even if it's like 1-in-1,000 people or 1-in-10,000 people.
*Sorry for trying to add a positive spin on this thread.
^^
As a Canadian, I dread any high below 45 F; this can easily happen in Spring or Fall.
Winter? Forget about it...Coldest highs of most winters can easily be -5 F or colder.
Maybe 5-10 days in the winter are briefly mild enough that it doesn't feel too bad.
Even in England it has reached 102 in not too distance past.
It was just their record high for that date. It said it broke the previous record of 99 on that date in 1980. Now you have me curious. I have to look up their all time record high.
OK, they hit 106 in 1962. The record for the town I live in is 116, BUT they have much higher humidity and a higher dewpoint then I have. I think my state's record was 122 and that was tied just a year or two ago. Wonder what the record high is for Texas.
AND as a Northerner/Midwesterner, I enjoy every warm day of the year I can get.
That's the highest I've seen Houston get to in a long time. It's common for them to reach 100 and 101, but never 104 too often. This is definitely one hot summer here in Texas. I was in Lubbock earlier in the week and it only got as high as 98, and then I come home to Dallas, and it's 103.
Set another record today 103 I wish we could set some cold records this winter.
