West Texas had a pretty crap summer for greenery. Granted, It's a semi-arid climate so it never gets that green here to begin with, but we usually get enough thunderstorms from the monsoon to keep things somewhat lush. But the sun would just not go away this year, so everything stayed burnt and yellow. I always thought this was only a problem in dry climates, but apparently not even cities like Seattle or Vancouver are safe from this issue. So what are the typical grass conditions over the summer where you live? Is there enough rainfall to keep parks and fields green without irrigation?

Here in Victoria the grass goes a crispy dry brown during the summer unless watered. It's turning green again now.

Its usuwały less green than May-early June and September.

If it’s a dry July or August then it goes brown.

In the Seattle area, if the lawn is not watered it will completely dry out and go dormant in the summer.

My weeds stay green. Not enough rain for real grass.

My lawn usually goes brown in the Summer, obviously though some years are worse than others, I played golf in August and the course looked more like a desert, the greens were just dirt circles. Probably the worst I've ever seen, I played again yesterday though and the fairways were turning green again, though the course has made some 'temporary' greens to allow the original ones to recover. I used to wonder how the greens in Spain were kept so green but I think (don't know for sure) that actually they have a different 'type' of grass? Can anyone confirm this?

It's not just the dryness that turns grass brown, it's the heat, type of grass, type & depth of soil too.. If you have a lot of rocks underneath that will enhance the heat for the roots, if its compacted the roots will dry out easier.
I'm not familiar with Southern Type Grasses but I do know... Rye Grass hates the heat and cant tolerate droughts. Fescue can better.

I ALWAYS see browning in summer around this area especially from people that don't water and if it doesn't rain much in summer. While the humidity helps, the strong sun and hot temps cook the grass. The lawns that are greener don't have Rye Grass in it.

Most of them are weeds with clover in them which stay green more. When parks and fields start turning brown you know we're in a drought.

Does your grass stay green during the summertime?
Yes & No. Some turns Brown if I don't use a sprinkler. Usually we get enough rain (not this year).

If I see a dry pattern coming I will throw Hydretain down in May.. I don't have irrigation. I make sure I overseed with more Fescue now. I love Rye but hate it for summer.

Usually, it does. Not this year though. We had a Csa climate June and July with little to no rain.

Usually, but it can go brown in a dry summer. In SE England where I used to live, brown/yellow grass was a common sight. Even this summer (which was wet up here) parts of the SE, such as where my dad lives, were very warm and dry and had very brown, dead looking grass. Quite normal right in the SE coast area though.
