There used to be a weather fable in central Minnesota that the first thunder heard in spring, frost would come 6 months later.
Twice, years back, I marked on the calendar the first thunder in March and the first frost came both years 6 months later within 2 days.
I still think it's coincidence, but some old timers swear by it.
I didn't mark down the first thunder this year, so I don't know when the first frost will hit here in central Minnesota.
That fable wouldn't work for Toronto.
Usually we get our first thunderstorm of the year before April, sometimes February or (rarely) January.
Our avg. first frost/freeze (?) is supposed to be Oct 9th, I think.
Interesting how it can be predictable in central-Minnesota though.
Our local CBS met said that while models can be wrong, some are indicating that we COULD see our first frost of the season the first week of October. That would be earlier than usual. We will see.
Ew... does it look like gas has been poured on the vegetation?
First frost/freeze always saddens me. Still a ways off here though... it was a balmy 65° for a low here last night.
In regards to some of the lower replies... its strange, but often places to our southwest get a freeze before we do... I guess as the cold air ushers east. Northern Arkansas and northern Oklahoma always seem to get a frost or freeze before anywhere in Tennessee does... even here in northeast Tennessee... however, we usually get it the next night.
It didn't stay below freezing long enough to affect any of the vegetation. In fact, the weather has turned very warm and dry. I have recorded a scant 0.77 inches of precipitation so far this month, and the rain missed us again today in Merrimack County. (rain bands went off to the north as well as the south).

Ugh... turned hot here too! It was 89° today... only 1° from 90°! Some areas in the metro area recorded 90° temps today! Humid too.
The average first freeze in Lubbock is October 31, but I think it will be earlier than average this year. It has already been in the low 40s the past few nights. The earliest first freeze on record is October 7.
