Also, the cold is the main reason I don't want to live in Davis/Thomas/Elkins, WV. I think that is the most beautiful place on earth, but it's always chilly in the mountains.
I've lived in the same area my entire life, but it gets cold here. I remember that Cold Canadian and I did a temp comparison and my area is colder.
The coldest I can remember~can't remember the actual temp, but with windchill is was 90 below zero. Yup, not a misprint. It was a VERY cold morning and my car didn't start and it hurt to breathe. That was horrible.
Our coldest temp that I remember last year was minus 37~not sure what it was with windchill, but since they changed it a few years ago, I doubt it was more then 50 below. WAY too cold for me.
I also remember a period of three weeks~it was within the past 10 years~we didn't WARM UP to zero. Our daytime temps were about minus 10 and our nighttime temps were 20 to 30 below. I didn't think it'd EVER warm up.
Wow.. 90 below zero windchill is dangerously cold... frostbite in seconds. I know the great plains gets incredibly cold but at least it also gets very hot in summer too. I can believe that Toronto would be warmer than most of the northern great plains due to the fact that the great lakes helps to moderate the temperatures somewhat. I spent part of my childhood in Toronto and can remember some pretty chilly mornings myself....not sure what the temp was though back then.
Cold, just plain cold! I think upper Minnesota, the Dakotas would be colder than anything I've ever experienced. I don't think I've experienced 40 below, or wind chills like Jammie mentioned, that is just brutal, a good time to stay in front of the fire place!
I was working nights, about 3 years ago. It was the Cadillac apartment building downtown. Winds were about 20 to 30mph, blowing snow, and -30 below out.
40+ years in WI. I'd say any of the northern regions/states wil have their nasty moments, where you can go days never getting above zero, and the windshill still hits 40+ below ( after they re-did the calculations a few years ago ). Mix in 100" of snow thru a season, and i'll be glad to now live in a spot where 20 degrees i'm told is frigid ( that's above zero, haha )
