Yeah wikipedia isn't exactly renowned for its sunshine accuracy. According to the Tehran, Iran page (last month) they had an average of 505 hrs in June.

The 2,250hrs seems more plausible.
I agree. There is a steady increase as one goes southwards, with higher values at Iquique and higher still at Antofagasta.

I once spent several days in Arica in early April and the power of the sunlight even through thinnish morning cloud patches was greater than I expected. But then, around midday on the Andean slopes (at 23S) at about 8,000' it was very strong indeed, belying the impression at first given by modest temperatures.

I can imagine!

The sun was really glaring up in the mountains in NZ.

Yep. In the Andean case we sought some shelter for a time (were on retrun leg of a minibus trip to geysers).
