I just got back from the Gold Coast where it is currently 2 C cooler than Christchurch! It's 2 AM now but it's 16 C / 61 F. The average daily high for this time of year is about 11 C / 52 F, so this is really quite remarkable. This is a good example of the Fohn wind effect.
