Actually now that I looked into it, elks don't cause a lot fatal accidents. In 2011 there was 1195 collisions with elk and 2811 with deer, but only 3 people died. In 2010 no fatal accidents were recorded.
They don't attack people - people drive into them and they are pretty big animals so they will probably crush your car and potentially kill you.

Northern Ontario highways have signs with a picture of a moose
with warning "Night danger".
Needless to say, when travelling on those roads at night I drove behind a semi truck-trailer
as much as possible, better for a moose to hit an 18 wheeler than my car
No elks here, but a lot of animals making stupid moves in front of cars in the dark. I recently ran into another fox. Don't know how it did it, but it damaged a tire. Or maybe it was a bigger thing? Not sure, as it came from nowhere and darted into my wheels while I was cruising at around 70 mph.
