Environment Canada has stats on "average days with measureable sunshine"
so I thought it would be interesting to see how many days without it we get,
in each month and annually.

I also thought it'd be neat if other members could find similar stats for where they live.

"Toronto"
Jan: 9.7
Feb: 6.8
Mar: 6.7
Apr: 3.6
May: 2.9
Jun: 1.7
Jul: 1.0
Aug: 1.4
Sep: 2.8
Oct: 3.9
Nov: 9.6
Dec: 12.1
Annual: 62.4 days without measureable sun.

June, July and August are sometimes sunny-enough for me,
other times they are still cloudier than I'd prefer.

This might give people from "sunny climates" perspective on what it's like in a climate that isn't sunny...
Or perhaps sound good to people who come from "distinctly-cloudy climates" like Newfoundland or Northern Europe.

There aren't any average stats for Buxton but last year's August - December may give an approximation:

August - 4 sunless days
September - 2 sunless days
October - 8 sunless days
November - 12 sunless days
December - 15 sunless days

Note that Buxton is generally cloudier than anywhere else in England due to its topographical situation.

I counted the days with sunshine recorded (anything from half an hour to 15+ hours a day) at LHR in 2009, and it came out at 316.

That means we only had 49 totally sunless days last year, and 2009 was duller than average. What constitutes 'measurable sunshine'?

Wouldn't measurable sunshine be anything above 0.1 hours?

That's what I go by, in which case March 20th has been the first day to have no measurable sunshine, a surprise for cloudy Fuxton.

I don't know official stats for this year,
but I think it's safe to say that Toronto has had 4-8 days in 2010 without even 0.1 hrs of sun.
The number could be higher though, as there were some days with "lighter overcast" back in February.

This March we've mostly had sunny days or cloudy days, not much in between.

But today was a day straight from Mordor:
-yesterday's high of 18 C had a forecast low of 4 C at this morning's sunrise
-not only did it not warm up, but under a steady 20km/h north wind, the temps continued to slowly drop
-mid-afternoon it was 2 C
-overnight low is "only" dropping to 0 C (strong indicator of heavy-cloudcover)
-surprisingly, no measureable precip, though I recall a fine, light mist in the air for a few minutes.

That seems surprisingly low. Here in North Jersey I think we've have way more than 4-8 days with 0 hours of sunshine. Maybe because we were affected by more storm systems? Often times the sun wouldn't even peak through the clouds for 3-4 days.

But it has been sunny to mostly sunny for five days straight. Has it been the same up in Toronto?

Days with 0.0 hours of sun per year are not rare here, with 12 such occurances in the last 12 months, and 36 days with less than 1 hour of sun.

^^ Still better than us mate!
(36 days with 1 hour vs. 62 days with 0.0 hours)
