Unhappy at the strong winds that are making so much noise I can't sleep. But happy that this is a Foehn wind from the NW that is keeping the temp at a relatively balmy 19 C / 66 F at 3:30 AM -- the temp has hardly changed since noon!

Yesterday was absolutely awful with 34C reached in a suffocating hot and dry NW airflow. Just about everyone - apart from the "newcomers" - complained about it.
Funny how tempers rise once that bloody NW wind gets established - too much heat at once.
Wifey shut all windows, kept curtains closed and turned the A/C on for the first time of this "summer" season which was nice for me to come home to after being out in the evil hot air (YUK).
One of my neighbours has even put up tin foil on all his west-facing windows to "block' out the evil sun.

Given we just had the crappest imaginable summer in Buxton this year, with lows in single figures (°C) most of the time, no sunshine, lots of drizzle and highs between 14-18°C, PLUS not a single thunderstorm, I thought I'd compile a brief list of surprising cities/places with better summers (more sunshine) and more thunderstorms than Buxton, just for fun, just so you realise it isn't only places south of here with "better summers".

Barrow, Alaska
Deadhorse, Alaska
Nuuk, Greenland
Baffin Island
Antarctica
Reykjavik, Iceland
Keflavik, Iceland
Summit of Mt Everest
Hammerfest, Norway
Tambey, Russia
Mys Shmidta, Russia
Sitka, Alaska
Aleutian Islands

Places worse? Maybe Campbell Island.

A bit of an over-exaggeration Weatherfan?

If you want a crappy summer, just look back at 2008.

I was in the East Midlands then. It wasn't actually a bad summer there. June was average in temperature and fairly sunny and July ended with a warm spell far longer than anything this summer. The only bad part of that summer was the unusually dull August. There was also thunder, unlike crummy summer 2011.

Summer 2011 blew chunks. Experiencing the coldest summer since 1988 in Buxton of all places is like a nightmare come true. Maxes between 12 - 18°C is NOT summer, 22-28°C would be. 15°C by day with 25 days of drizzle and 95 hours of sun is just a dirty mess, as cold as but twice as dull as January in Austin, Texas or something. YECH.

All those subarctic climates I mentioned are all better in the respect of having sunshine all summer, one thing Fuxton doesn't have. Grrrr.

Summer 2008 was just unbelievebly wet, here's the rainfall for each summer month that year for me:

June 153.9 mm
July 153.7 mm
August 272.8 mm

But yeah July ended with a good warm spell with temperatures reaching 31c.

Supporting my points elsewhere.

Undoubtedly! Nov-Feb average 20% of possible sun, the year about 15%.

Heading towards an air frost tonight. Yuck. Just had to go outside in the awful 36 degree cold, feels like a horrible stinging sensation, don't know why anybody likes it.
