My wife and I have been invited to a couples engagement party for the son (and his girlfriend) of a couple we have been close friends with for years. Should we bring a gift to something like this? We have never been invited to one of these before and are not sure what is expected.

If you'll be going to the wedding as well, then a bottle of wine is enough (because you'll be giving a wedding gift later on). If you won't be going to the wedding, you might give the engaged couple a gift card to a store that sells housewares...Target, Ikea, something like that.

I've only gone to one of those, for a college roomie, but I gave them a basket with good Champagne and bride-and-groom toasting glasses. One less thing they'll have to worry about for the wedding.

However, I tend not to go to those things. Chances are there will be a shower later, and then there is the wedding. Comes a point where it's just gift extortion, so I usually send my regrets.
