So for all the guys who choose do this of their own accord and free will, that can't just be what they want to do?

From a mans perspective surely you want to make them happy?
Yeah but there is a limit to it before you cross into extreme thirst and insanity.

I think the larger and more expensive the engagement ring the more shallow and artificial the relationship is.

Look, bottom line, if a man doesn't spend at least 1 year's salary on an engagement ring, then he's a selfish jerk who only cares about himself.

Maybe it's my small town, but the average engagement ring sale here is 1500-2500. We do get those big spenders, but its very rare. I don't think 1500 for a diamond ring is that horrible. The 3 month salary thing, nobody does that lol Most couples know what they can and cannot afford, and know they can always trade in and upgrade later on if they want. What someone wants to spend is nobody's business. I think it's dumb to buy a brand spanking new vehicle, but people do it. It's their finances, not mine. I've had couples ask for $300 rings (which we just sell them a fashion ring) to $10k rings. Different strokes for different folks. Many people are very sentimental with their jewelry as it's something they someday hope to pass down to their kids, grandkids, etc. A lady comes in twice a year to buy Levian, so she'll have a piece to leave each of her granddaughters when she passes. And like I said, the big spenders usually pay cash or check. These people are not hurting for money or starting out life in debt. You can't take it with you is what they tell us.

Proper planning will avoid all that altogether

In honesty, I don't think $2k is an outrageous amount for a diamond ring if you are making a pretty middle class salary. But anything over $4-5k is just foolish IMO.
