How was his proposal with him not having a ring?

In my view, the ring is symbolic of the commitment. With the internet and e-tailers like Blue Nile, you can buy a GIA-certified stone at a fraction of the price you'd get hit with at the local shopping mall jeweler. You can buy a 1 carat solitaire with pretty good cut/color/clarity in a basic setting for $5K. I'm not suggesting a 20 year old kid rush out and buy something like that but a 30-something with a real job, a mortgage, and a funded 401(k) account can handle it. The 20 year old kid should buy a CZ fake diamond online from somewhere like Ziamond.com. $475.00 for a 1 1/2 carat solitaire in a cathedral setting and you can easily get a 10% to 20% discount off that.

You don't even have to go to the internet...go to a good local jeweler or wholesaler. Stay away from the malls. And I wouldn't buy a CZ. Women can be awfully sentimental about their engagement ring, and CZ's frost after a few years and look terrible. Go for a moissanite. And a carat and a half is huge....consider the comfort level if the woman wearing it.

He was on one knee when he proposed, but he knew that big items, such as this (a ring) was something I want to pick out myself. I wouldn't want him spending that kind of money unless it's something I know I really want.

My point being that wanting a big ring, a small ring, or no ring has no direct bearing on how much one loves one's future spouse or what sort of marriage one will have once one is married.

Some people like jewelry and can afford it.

Some people don't like much jewelry and either can or cannot afford it.

The disconnect is when people like expensive jewelry that they cannot afford.

And, that is why this topic pops up all the damned time.

This topic is also about even though you can afford it, there seems to be merits to not buy one anyways.

Many of them are this way. You'd be lucky to get back 5% what you paid
