Personally I rather enjoy showering my partner with gifts anyway but for something like that I really don't mind and would enjoy pushing the boat out as I do have the great sense for the occasion and unfortunately I do have the tendency to go a bit wild lol
The sensible answer is whatever you can comfortably afford though

What you "like" to spend and what you can afford are 2 different things. Everyone is different. I personally did not want a big stone but then again, size is relative. A carat to one person may be large and to another it isn't.
I've heard/read that 2 months' salary is what "should" be spent but who cares what other people think you should do.
It's not about the size of the stone but rather the intention behind it.

I'm pretty sure the stores that sell the rings came up with the 2 month's salary and I absolutely agree it's about the intention.
It depends on the couple, their goals, and budget.
Some girls are "all about the ring" while others are fine with something smaller.
(It's not uncommon for "the ring" to be upgraded down the road when money's more plentiful.)
Sorry - probably was of no help.. but I'd have a talk with the ring receiver... see what they think.
I think two months salary or less is reasonable. I have been doing lots of looking lately for ideas and what I like seems to be in the $3-5k range just for the setting. Add the diamond and maybe $10k. Now of course that is with me spending my own money. I would never spend a mans in the same fashion.
