Before i open a door to the outside i always stop for a few seconds and focus as to whats outside the door, i also turn my shoes upside down before putting them on as scorpions like to go into shoes.Living on a Florida fresh water lake you will almost certainly see some gators once in a while, they also tend to get aggressive in spring mating season,if you have dogs keep a close eye on them as gators like to eat dogs.
You'll probably never have a problem but it doesnt hurt to be a bit cautious..

It's possible to have alligators near any body of water. But since you are in Florida you could get a gun and shoot them! :-) Then you can use them for what nature truly intended them for, shoes, gloves and handbags! Seriously it does happen but it is rare, you should always keep on eye out on your kids.

I'd be a lot more concerned with the "headless drivers" than gators. Have a canal in the back yard. Haven't seen a gator yet and it's been 17 years now.

Good advice above, all of it. No worse than living in the north where they have bears.

Have lived 2 years in Jupiter on a lake, have yet to see a single gator...or snake for that matter. Now lizards....good God!

Gator snatches, eats dog in Plantation

It's happening very often. You do need to be very concerned. Always.

Stupid dog owner walking unleashed dog next to a canal + stupid dog walking up close to the water = dead dog.
