i live in Miami Beach, and the stores here have this irritating practice of making you show your receipt as you exit .... as if they assume everyone is a theif until proven otherwise, even though they can plainly see that the customer is not 10 damn feet from the register where they just paid.

i realize it's a small thing, but it annoys the helloutta me, nonetheless. Mostly the big-box places -- Target, Walmart, K-mart - but i've run into it in a few smaller shops as well.

I've never encountered this in any other state - only here in Miami; and I'm wondering if this is only done down here, or if it's common in other FLA cities as well - can anyone tell me if this is also a common practice in WPB?

They do it here in NY as well...started with Costco and some other stores have followed suit...but under NYS law they cannot force you to show the receipt...but then again they might bar you from the store...so go with the flow or shop else where...I do not agree with the policy...but unless everyone else is willing to refuse showing the receipt...what choice do you have????

We spent more than a week shopping in Orlando, small stores, outlets ... sometimes with bags, sometimes without bags but non of the small/big stores asked us for receipt while we were carrying them out the stores.

Happens here in Texas, usually at Sams and Costco, Fry's, bigger places.

I'm in Broward, and all the Costcos and BJs make you show your receipt as you exit (they don't bag your items). Never been an issue at Wal-Mart or Target (unless the security scanner goes off). Only my experience.

They used to do it at the super walmarts but the last few visits I don't think they have...mostly at Costco, BJs, SAMs club, Restaurant Depot...I shopped at Sawgrass Mills mall over the weekend and never had it happen once...maybe it's a Miami thing at the smaller stores..

thanks everyone -

and sorry, i should have clarified - yes, Costco, BJ's and Sam's have always done this; even up north in Philly, NJ, and NY where i came from. so i expect it from them - but not from 'regular' retail stores.

other than the 'warehouse club' stores, I have never encountered this practice in regular retail stores until i came to Miami. i was just visiting home and enjoyed shopping at Target & Kmart without being made to feel like a criminal, and I'd like to be able to do so in WPB too when i move up there.... so i'm hoping it's not as common there as it is in Miami.

They check receipts in the KMart and Walmart in NJ but mostly around CHristmas time - they do have the alarms by the exits but I guess it's an extra precaution (job security for someone too <G>)

Nobody asks to see your receipt up here on the Treasure Coast except for Sam's & BJ's. Sounds like it's supposed to be a deterrent but I don't blame you one bit for finding it offensive. Really, I don't see the point. Everything's already captured on video in the store and what's the ticket checker going to do to the scofflaw, anyway...wrestle him to the ground like a grizzly bear or maybe handcuff him to the grocery cart until management arrives? Maybe they could make them wear one of those "thermal--keeps food cool up to 3 hours" bags on their head next time they come in the store. I hate thieves but treating an honest customer like a criminal would get my goat.

The BJs I go to in Broward has someone at the door checking receipts, but I don't think anyone has ever actually compared what's in my cart to what's on my receipt. They just kind of glance at it, then mark the receipt. I think I went to a K-Mart in Broward that checked receipts, too.
