I know Lake Worth has it's reputation, but, I know there are some good areas. I've heard good things about downtown. We like it he idea because we're both in our mid twenties, have no kids, and love the idea of being able to walk downtown with our dog. We're looking at a rental one block south of Lake Ave, on Federal Hwy, downtown Lake Worth. Any input?

Lake Ave is a cool little area, but the good area is fairly small. If you are looking for a walkable downtown I would also check out West Palm (particularly in the historic areas, Flamingo, El Cid, etc where there are some nice guest home rentals that won't break the bank) and also Delray Beach. Of course both have their sketchy hoods but IMHO the livable areas are bigger in size than Lake Worth and would give more choices wrt to areas that are dog walkable along with nice shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. Delray in particular has a lot of rental options right in the downtown area.

In Lake Worth I'd still prefer to be north of downtown (and east), though about a block south isn't quite the bad part.

But... Federal Highway would be kinda busy.

You can actually be a few blocks south of Lake Ave as long as you're east of US1 and it's still pretty nice. I'd say its a more hipster hood than Delray and about 50% cheaper. Not nearly as much going on though.

if you're into more alternative/punk kind of stuff I think LW would be better than DelRay.

I have several friends who are east of Fed, south of the bridge and I actually prefer it to my area.

But if you do go north, there are some really cute places even west of Fed like on L St.

It seems like there are pockets of cool young people, and then pockets of miserable older people who think they live on Palm Beach.

agood idea would be to pick a neighborhood, and visit it several times. Walk around during the day with the dog. See who you meet. Wish I had done that!

Are you looking at one of those new buildings?

I would tend to stay off of Fed though. I drive through there every night, and there is always some police activity there.

ByeByeLW, may I ask at what intersection (nearest) did/do you live at? Just curious...I think I can provide some interesting input here.
