Delray is the hapenning spot in SOUTH fLORIDA. You won't find a better spot as far as party/driving distance and whats available in restaurants entertainment etc. Delray known to be a little pricey for real estate but there are some bargains to be had, look near the borders of Delray/Boynton. Great areas for homes and still within reach of downtown Delray and Boynton

How bad are the thunderstorms? Obviously plenty of people still live here.

South Florida is different in that you can have million dollar homes and 2 blocks down can be the start of crack town. I lived in Boca Raton for 14 years and Pembroke Pines for 1 year before moving to Denver. There are good and bad sections in most south Florida towns. I’ve also found that good and bad is in the eye of the beholder. What has always worked for me is to find a neighborhood you are interested in then go into the local grocery store, pharmacy, restaurants, etc. Do you “fit” in? Do you feel comfortable? Are these your kind of people?

I have to say, as snobby as it sounds, this quote is exactly right. As we contemplate our second move in Florida (first move having been from up north to Orlando) this question weighs very heavily in our minds. People, ourselves included, sometimes get too focused on the "house" rather than the "people", and if you ask me, like-minded people are what make a great neighborhood to us, not just palm trees and swimming pools.

OP, Theres an area West of 95 in Boynton Beach called the Renaissance commons area that has a ton of restaurants, shopping, gyms etc. Housing prices are pretty low right now for some nice homes. There's an Irish pub there too.
