HELLO
My family has recently moved to Boca Raton, Del Prado Elementary area. We have three children enrolled in that school. I would like to know what extra curricular activities they can do either in the school or in the surrounding area
ie tennis, karate, girls baseball, dance, theater etc.
Its always hard for children to adjust to a big move and I would like them to be as active as possible since there appears to be few children in our immediate neighborhood:.

If you are near Del Prado you are near the Y. If you go east on palmetto from teh school you go north on Toledo Road and it is at the stop sign. There are tons of activities there.

The tennis center is on St. Andrews, just go east on palmetto again, and then north on st. andrews and you will see it, they do kids stuff there. There are also a lot of activities at sugar sand park, again, east on palmetto, and south on miitary and it is right there.

look up the recreator online, it lists the city of boca kids activities and places.

Default Thank you!!!

I really appreciate your advice.
It has been a quite difficult move as I am in China for most of the year studying Chinese Medicine and my wife had to orchestrate the move by herself with three little girls . Your info is greatly appreciated!!

You're welcome. I'm a little jealous! I'd love to study Chinese Medicine!!!

I was told that there are a lot of school clubs at Del Prado, I'd be interested to know how you find it.

I am not a parent but what about after school programs or sports that way they can meet more kids from school too? In Boca the other day at the Library on Spansh River I picked up a brochure and they had many different classes for kids to adults as well with the topics you listed.

Please pardon the length of this post. My daughter just started 4th grade at Del Prado.

As far as martial arts go, Park's Tae Kwon Do is in the same shopping center as Sweet Tomatoes on the NW corner of Palmetto and Powerline. I'm not sure what else is in the area.

For softball, your options will be limited to either what the Y offers (like someone else said, not far from Del Prado) or the county rec stuff. Most of the neighborhood that feeds into Del Prado is not part of the City of Boca. So if you do wish to participate in sports for the City of Boca, i.e. SABR (soccer), you pay a MUCH higher fee--if they even let you in at all! I know there are rec softball teams out at South County Regional Park (between Yamato and Glades, west of 441), so that's an option. For soccer there is the GBYSA and I think they're also out of South County.

The Pool and Tennis Center is also city-run. Again, registration rates for non-city residents is much higher.

For dance, I don't know of any that are right in the neighborhood. My daughter dances out at Mrs. P's which is at SW 18th Street (Marina Blvd.) and 441. She just started her 4th year there and we've been quite happy. Another studio in the area that I know of is Jewels. They've recently relocated to the shopping center at Glades Road and Boca Rio Road (where Off Broadway Shoes is). Shape Shop also recently moved there--excellent place to get your dance gear. And if you Google them, you can come up with a 20% off coupon. That especially comes in handy when your child has to have the $70.00 tap shoes. Can you tell I'm there? LOL Boca Dance Theater is another one that is around, but I'm not sure of the exact location.

I can also highly recommend Girl Scouts. I'm a troop leader for the Junior level (4th and 5th grades). And I know for a fact there will be a Girl Scout Roundup at Del Prado this coming Tuesday at 7pm. The flyers may not have gone home yet (I'll be resolving that tomorrow), but the show is still on. That's a great way to get to know more people in the neighborhood, the school community and beyond. Girl Scouts is not just cookies, crafts and camping. The girls also do a lot of community service projects, special events only open to Girl Scouts and other stuff too.

Lastly, it was previously mentioned that Del Prado has a good club organization. I can definitely attest that it has a wide variety of stuff available. I've seen everything from cooking to Legos, sports, chess, dance, art, science, robot building and other stuff that I can't think of right now. Normally the registration info for the first club session is given out during Orientation/Meet the Teacher, but they didn't give it out yet. I'm assuming that they're still working on the offerings.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask me! BTW, I don't live in Del Prado's immediate neighborhood. My daughter was accepted into the gifted program there a few years ago. I've just gotten to know the neighborhood. I wish your family the best of luck in settling in to the neighborhood.

You have a wonderful family. I got to meet them tonight.

We had an amazing turnout tonight and now I'm trying to group all those that signed up into troops. Oh my goodness gracious...
