Hello, Floridians, I'm a 25 year old girl, Filipino, born and raised in North Jersey, pursuing a career in mental health counseling. For some reason, accredited mental health counseling programs aren't as abundant up here as they are down in FL ... So I wanted to get a bit of background info on the area before I waste my time researching a school I couldn't stand to live by.
And one of the specific schools I'm considering is Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

About me, since i've lived less than half an hour from NYC all my life, a bit of culture and diversity is a must ... I don't mind towns with a little bit of so-called "ghetto"-ness (I've lived in New Brunswick and on the outskirts of Newark before) but I don't want to fear for my life. An area with a decent twenties scene would be preferable, but I'm definitely over the whole party raging scene.

How comfortable would I be in Boca Raton? Or at FAU, if anyone is familiar w/ the school ...

Thanks in advance !

I commuted to FAU for a year to finish my undergrad. It's a decent state school with good professors. FAU is a commuter school not far from the beach. Boca Raton is pretty upscale with lots NY/NJ transplants. Boca Raton (and South Florida in general) has lots of old people. Although there are some college age/young professional people scattered about. It's about halfway between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, which give you more options for entertainment and is closer to Miami.
