I was recently accepted to Florida Atlantic University as a graduate student. I will be attempting to live on my 12k/year stipend and hope to have to take out as few loans as possible.
Is there any nearby area with very low rent? I'm coming from Cleveland and looking at the prices of apartments is kind of shocking. I'm hoping for a studio or 1br and to be able to have my own place, but roommates might be necessary.
Any advice?
How far is Deerfield Beach from FAU? Pompano Beach? Are these good places to live?
Are there any areas that are not safe?

Thanks.

I think having a roommate would probably be your best bet financially. 1 Bedroom apartments around campus Boca typically go for around $700 - $1,000 a month.

Some portions of Deerfield and Pompano are fine, others not so much. Definitely drive down and check out any places in those cities.

Actually, I have to respectfully disagree. If you don't have too many belongings, I recommend staying in a dorm on campus. It comes out to just over $800 per month to live in a quad. (Which is taken added to your tuition fee at the beginning of the semester.) You can go to FAU's website and look at their housing. You have your own bedroom and share a bathroom with one other person. I know this because I was applying in to the Psy D program and a friend of mine was accepted into the Masters program for this fall. I did a bunch of research. I'm moving down there in a month and I got a one bedroom for $846 a month about 10-15 from main campus. Just fyi. Hope I helped.

Be very wary of who you move in. There are a ton of pricks that attend FAU, although they tend to be the undergrads.
