Some friends and I are coming in town for a wedding in a few months and we're staying at a place at Federal HWY and 3rd Ave. Is this a decent area? Are we safe to walk south to Lake Ave. (which I assume is the downtown area) and East to the beach? Should we rent this place? Some of the posts about Lake Worth have me thinking twice about it. Thanks.

be weary of your surroundings but you should be fine. There are some lower income areas surrounding that area, but that part should be fine for a couple week rental.
Where is the wedding at?

Thanks for the reply. The wedding is in West Palm Beach. Is the downtown area safe to walk around at night? How is the Beach just over the bridge? I see there is a Four Seasons over there, so it must be somewhat nice.

I would stay in downtown Delray. A lot going on (bars and places to eat) and I found it to be really safe. Many temporary rentals in that area.

Delray is cool but pretty far from Downtown West Palm. Also, the North third street is good, South third...... not so good. The walk to the Lake worth Beach may be pretty far. Especially on the way back.
The beach for West Palm Beach is Palm Beach. Not great, no bathrooms.

The Four Seasons is on the beach but much closer to Lake worth Beach than the public beach of Palm Beach proper.

You are renting a house when you are coming down for a wedding? How long will you be staying?

It's a funky hood. I live off south 6th - east of federal. If you go one block east of federal, it's really nice - one block west of federal, it's pretty run down. It's the definition of one side of the "tracks" versus another ... and there's not even a railroad track seperating the two. Quite frankly, it's quite an astonishing contrast when you can stand in the middle of a street - look left and see one thing, look right - and see something starkly different.

Is it a 'bad area'? I think that will depend on what you think a 'bad area' is. On the west side of federal, it is lower income, "blue collar", and quite a few migrant workers and families. Some call the latter "illegals", and some folks get freaked out by this crowd & some don't. In my personal experience, there's nothing to worry about - but your mileage may vary.

On the east side, it's the more affluent crowd. Restored historic homes, great yards, people walking pets and kids.

South 3rd ave is a 1 or 2 minute walk to downtown. Super easy. You might run into a bum if you're stumbling home from a bar at one am. But you're chances of getting mugged or whatever is no different than anywhere else, in my opinion.
