My husband and I just got married and are moving to southern Florida from Maine. He's working in Boca Raton and I'll work in that area also. We want to rent a place in a decent area for under $800/mo. Don't want to get stuck with a cheap apartment in the ghetto. Willing to commute a half hour or so. Any suggestions on where we should look for an apartment? Or maybe where we should stay away from? Thanks!

First advice is STAY IN MAINE! LOL

I don't think you'll find anything in the area for $800 (or at least anything you'd actually want to live in). We moved out of Boynton Beach 4 years ago but back then we were renting a 2 BR for $1,250.

Under $800/month in Boca in a decent area, will be hard to find. 1 bedroom apartments in safe areas that are gated start at $1K. Rents are going up because of the demand since the housing bust and foreclosures.

Also I hope you both actually got jobs cut in stone here, because the market is terrible right now.

I've seen some places in ft lauderdale that are around what we're looking for. How are the jobs there? 30 min from boca or is there crazy traffic? Good area?

Just make sure that you physically go to see these places. I can't imagine living in anything at $800/month in South Florida.

As for the drive time, it all depends on how close you are to 95.

My wife and I up until fairly recently commuted from Wellington (north of boca) to Jackson Memorial in Miami daily, via the turnpike to I-95. Usually it would take us 1hr - 1hr 15min. Left home 5:30 am. It was not terrible. Boca to Fort Lauderdale is very doable. Don't sweat it.

Not true. Sister-in-law pays around 700/mo and it is a nice 3 bed, 2 bath place in a pretty nice apt. complex (Delray Beach).

Smart move, Boca is a great little city. The next 6/7 months of weather are the best of anywhere I've been. This is the high season for rent, $800 might be tough but possible with a years lease for 1 br. I live east of 95 near Camino Real which I highly recommend as a good area to aim for. Near FAU is where most of the apartments are available, also a good area to live.
