Wondering what the board's opinion is of the neighborhoods of PB Island proper, specifically, which areas have the optimal (lowest) taxes yet still close enough to town to have an active lifestyle. Are there variations in the property taxes among the neighborhoods? Any crime issues? Any areas to avoid?

I love it. If you can afford it it doesn't get much better as far as clean, beautiful, crime free and very upscale.

I think the Island as a whole has a millage rate of around 19 so different parts of the island shouldn't affect you much. Size of your lot may though since most of the assessment is in the land value. It's a pretty small island so your never far from the restaurants/shopping, and it's well patrolled.
Unless your in a condo it's tough to get a home under a million.

Palm Beach is one of the most expensive cities in the US, if you can afford to live there then I don't think taxes are much of a concern.

Thanks for all of the replies. Taxes will not be a deal-breaker, but like many others, I want to get as close as possible to an optimal situation -- low property taxes and good lifestyle.

As mentioned above, if you live in the town of Palm Beach, the tax rate will be the same. It will depend on the value of your property. Typically, homes in the "north end" of Palm Beach proper are typically less expensive. The Estate Section is most expensive, and "in town" (near downtown) will be pricier than Northend as well. There's a bunch of condo buildings in the South Part of town as well.

For even lower taxes, consider other barrier Island towns nearby, such as Manalapan, Gulf Stream and Hypoluxo. Though living in these other areas will take you further from Palm Beach's town center, such as Worth Avenue, etc. Here is a listing of the millage rates by municipality in Palm Beach County:
