My stepson and his new wife recently moved to Palm Beach Gardens about a year ago. My husband, son and I just came back from a visit there and my husband really loves the area. We looked online and saw some very reasonable real estate listings for Riviera Beach. When i looked online i also saw some very negative reviews about the area in general. Some of the condos i pulled on Realtor.com were listed at about 40k and up. All of those were for developments that are relatively new (2006 or so), looked very nice, and originally sold at around 130k and up. So buying something at this price seems like a great deal for us. We live in Colorado right now and would probably be buying initially as an investment and then moving in a few years for retirement (my husband is close to 60 now).

My stepson says the low prices have a lot to do with the economy and foreclosures. But it almost seems to be too good to be true or evidence that people are leaving the area in droves.... since i am not familiar with the area and my only opinion stems from driving through it and spending some time on the beach (which was beautiful by the way) what are your thoughts?

Riviera Beach on a whole is not a desirable area, due to the above.

I don't think you will want to live in Riviera Beach between the intercoastal and I-95. Just watch a couple old episodes of COPS as they had a lot based there. Now I have to say across the intercoastal they have been doing a lot of good work (like with the Ocean Mall). There are some neighborhood there (called Singer Island) that are very nice as well as a lot of ocean front condos. I would look more up between PGA Blvd. and Jupiter/Juno.

Thanks for the feedback. Some of the negative info i found was from several years ago so i was not sure if things were different now. Singer Island i hear is better but looks to be out of my price range.

There is a good reason that real estate is now selling for 1/8 of what it sold for new! Developers found plenty of suckers in the boom, built nice communities in the ghetto and then the market crashed......guess what, it is still built in the ghetto!

Does anyone know about West 4th St., Riviera Beach? My son wants to buy a house there and I don't like what I hear about the area.
