A couple years ago, I moved to the mid-west for a really good job. Last year I got married and now I just found out my wife and I are expecting a child. My wife's family lives in another country, so my family is the only family we have here in the states. Anyways, ALL of my family lives in Florida, so I keep thinking it would be best to be closer to them. I am very close to my family and spend almost all of my vacation on going to see them for various holidays/events. I am trying to relocate through my job, but Florida is still a pretty dead market. Right now my plan is to keep looking for a job and not settle on a job that I consider worse than the one I have now. The only thing that makes me question whether I should move or not is my current job. I like it there and they like me. What would you do? Should I move? Thanks for the advice!

Stay where you are. The economy is not great anywhere. If you have a solid position where you are, then that's where you need to be. You have a family to support now.

There is no point in moving unless you find a job at equal or greater pay rate, with good career advancement in an area with a lower cost of living than where you are now. But even to take a chance on moving is shaky because a new job may not last for long.

Once you have a child your whole focus on life will change. Your wife will meet other moms with babies, she'll start to have play dates with the moms of other young children. Once pre school and school start, you'll meet a whole new bunch of people. You'll make friends. Those new friends will be your family too. The activities you'll have with your child will keep you more rooted in your current city and you'll look less to always be running to Florida.

Good luck

Stay where you are..you will probably make much less if you found another job...Its never easy not having family around I had my son in Colorado when we lived there for 5.5 yrs and we had no family there and well it wasnt easy until we moved back to NY after our son was born....anyway, if you had a great oppty than you would have a decision to make...South Florida is pretty expensive....

Good Luck
I have to agree with Willow, its very easy to make friends who become part of your family..... When we moved from NY to NJ my son was 4 years old and we made some great friends and all our friends at the time had little ones, and it does become more difficult to leave if you already have those bonds with your new friends...

Thanks for advice everyone. Is there anyone that thinks I should move closer to my family (given I find a job that has equal or more potential than my current job)?

If you FIND a comparable job, then move. But don't make a move before then.

I don't know. Family is very important with kids. I have one toddler who adores his grandma and another baby on the way. Grandma is moving to to her FL residence permemently and we have been considering moving down as well. But our situation is different, my husband has his own company and works from home (and can work anywhere) so we are not in your financial situation. But --grandma saves us a ton with childcare costs. And thy are really best friends. I sometimes think my toddler loves his beloved grandma more than me! How can I seperate them?

If the location is right for you as well as the job then move, if not stay where you are. Have you asked your wife what she would like to do as far as moving?

Congratulations on the baby, it is an exciting time.

My wife really wants to move to Florida to be closer to family. Right now it's a 22 hour drive to South Florida...

I would say if you both agree and you can secure a residence and employment your best decision would be to move as soon as possible before the baby gets here or pick a specific time frame after the baby is born to move.
