I've recently been accepted into FAU and will be moving to Addison Park, a student housing complex. I'm 23 years old and have been living in Raleigh, NC for most of my life. I have a few questions about the area:

1) Is Boca Raton "uppity"? I've heard that the people in this town can be pretty snobby.
2) What is the nightlife like? Are there any hip clubs for people my age? Are there any similarities to Miami? I'm pretty young so an active area right on the beach would be ideal.
3) What are the job opportunities for college students with little to no experience? I'm talking waitress jobs, customer service, retail, etc.
4) As a black, not-so-wealthy girl, will it be hard for me to fit in here? Do a lot of minorities live in the area?

Thanks for any future replies.

There is more affluence in Boca, but lots of centered folks- wealthy and not. Snobs, some, but for the most part, you will see what you are looking for. You will meet every kind of person in Boca Raton. I know a homeless man that does small jobs who has a web site and cell phone!

You will do great and will love the experience! I don't sense that there is strong racism here (my GD is biracial), but, of course..... well, anyway.... There is a new Lord and Taylor at Mizner- that would be a really great place to work, IMO. You can apply online. There are a bunch of places to work near FAU.

As for clubs, others will chime in, but as a not-so-wealthy girl, let me share this link to the most incredible thrift store for clothing. It is crowded and not well air conditioned. Plan to take your time and go with the flow if you go shopping here. World Thrift store in Lake Worth Florida

You mentioned Miami, so I also want to encourage you to take a trip on the Tri-Rail. Many destinations in Miami-Dade are accessible by Tri-Rail and the trip becomes part of the experience. It stops running too early for clubbing, though. http://www.tri-rail.com/train-schedules/stm_wday.asp

Enjoy your adventure!

Ok I lived in Boca for almost 20 years and even attended FAU for about 2 weeks (long story, transferred/ graduated from UM).

1. Despite appearances, there are plenty of broke people in Boca (1st job out of college, financial planner in Boca). Big houses, fancy cars look great but if they are being financed with credit cards (maxed out) or financed for decades they they really are just being rented from the banks! Boca even has a housing project just east of FAU (Pearl City). There are some by wealthy people there but it's not Palm Beach Island.
2. Nightlife is a little light in Boca, but Ft Lauderdale is only 20 minutes south.
3. Plenty of waitress, retail jobs around. The mall is about 5 minutes west of FAU with tons of restaurants along the way.
4. There are plenty of minorities.
