My husband, twin 5 yr olds and me are looking to move to sunny Florida. We are currently living at my mother-in-laws and my husband can't find any decent paying job here. I'm trying to convince my husband that we need a change and we may as well be in a warm state where we can enjoy the weather. He has a degree in economics but wants to go into a different field. He has done almost every type of job possible (owned a construction company, waiter, salesman of all kinds, insurance sales, financial planning, to name a few) His desire is to eventually open a restaurant and I was thinking running a B&B may be a good start. Maybe working with tourists? We both love fishing-are there a lot of charter boats that need helpers? I grew up on Long Island and was always at the beach and would like my girls to enjoy a similar lifestyle. Long Island is too congested and expensive so we can't live there.
Also we need to consider the school rating since our girls will be starting school in September. We don't have much money at this time so all of your comments would greatly help us get a head start in the right direction. We have recently lived in Las Vegas and CT.

Jupiter has an extremely high cost of living, real estate is very expensive.

I would not move here without a job, most will be in the service industry and outside of season (Nov-Apr) that slows to a halt.I don't know of any B&B. That might be an interesting concept to try, there may be a reason (city code-wise) why there aren't any. There are a handful of boat charters, but I'd think most people will want someone local who knows "the secret spots"

My wife and I moved to Jupiter from Rockland County, NY last year - July 2013 - and I also grew up in Long Island and spent many a day at Jones Beach and the other numerous beaches throughout "The Island."

As far as jobs, all of the contractors - roofing, electrical, appliance installers, etc... - have a sign on their trucks "hiring"...but the pay is usually always less that $10 an hour to start...the fishing industry is seems dormant from November thru February and many of the party boats do not even go out...

Restaurants are a dime a dozen and unless you offer something special it's just another restaurant...unless of course you could figure out how to bring down the NY water with you, then you could start a bakery advertising NY Bread & Bagels...the lines would be out the door...

If I was younger...I would consider a job with the TSA...they always seem to be hiring and you both could start the process up in NY...the only problem is you will be working all holidays, weekends, nights, etc...

I can't help with the B&B, but how much experience does he have in each of those capacities you listed (owned company, waiter, etc.)? And do any positions reflect a promotion/increase in responsibility? Speaking from a HR perspective, he's jumped around alot and the positions are all lateral moves so he may not qualify for 'mid-career' positions at this point.

Just an observation.

Smile Thanks

Thanks for all of your comments. They were all very helpful and insightful. My husband is still avidly looking for a job/career and trying to stick with friends/acquaintances to find a job. At this point in his life that may be the best way to go.
