I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now and decided it was time to post.

I have a second interview at a company in Boca in a few days. This opportunity was something that just came into my hands, I did not seek it. We were just in Port St Lucie on vacation with my family over xmas and being from PA, we loved it. The kids loved being able to swim every day etc. I got this job opportunity as we were driving out of PSL.

Anyways - I want to make a very informed decision if I was offered the job so i am doing my research now.

I have three children - 7, 5, and 2, so schools are very important to us. My kids are in a good school district now.

My husband and I both have good jobs. He owns a local landscape company that has been very successful over the past 12 years. He is ready to move on though and completely burnt out of all the issues. Never getting paid on time, paying $$ in workers comp, taxes in general etc. He is sick of the snow plowing in the winter and dealing with the cold for many months. (his company also plows).

We have talked about living closer to the beach for a while now. We love the beach. We've been trying to relocate since November. Initially we wanted to move to Raleigh (closer for us to a beach but still a little farther away). We visited the area in October and loved it. But we are both having a hard time find jobs there. It's very disconcerting.

So when this opportunity fell into my lap we thought we should look into it.

I honestly never thought of living in Florida. My perception use to be that it was great to be there in winter but too hot and humid in the summer. But my husband and I are so sick of these PA winters that we just want a change and want to try something new.

The job I am looking at is a very well paying job. Being that the COL is higher in Boca, I think we would be okay if I worked for a little while and he stayed home with the kids to help them adjust.

In checking out housing, I see a ton of foreclosures. Why is that?

But a few questions - any suggestions on areas to check out with good schools? It seems Wellington has some good schools??

Also what about the job market down there in general? I always think waaay to much and thought what if I lost this job - would I be able to get another one easily? I work in corporate eCommerce /digital marketing.

i am slightly concerned too about my husband getting a job. He doesn't want to own a business anymore but rather work for someone else to get a regular paycheck. He has an MBA and has done well but I wonder how hard it will be for him to make that lead into another field. Sorry I'm kind of thinking out loud.

And the thought of a hurricane scares the heck out of me. Where we are located in PA, we don't have any major natural disasters. We did get hit with a tornado one time, but that was very rare.

Last question - what is the traffic like? Not sure if anyone is familiar with Pittsburgh and the tunnels, but driving into the city through the tunnels is a darn nightmare - people slow down to like 20 mph and traffic gets so backed up. I have a friend that moved to Delray and said if I can handle that - then I can handle boca traffic

So any insights or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

A few things....

1. Does your husband speak Spanish......if not, he won't be working in landscaping as a supervisor or above
2. Watch this cartoon :

Wellington is where I look first as that is a go to area for families moving and also check out West Boca as all the new developments are more family oriented. New construction in communities with HOA'S and CDD fees so be prepared for those. Boca is probably the top most expensive place to live because a lot of old money exist in it but it does substantial new growth with good schools. Hurricanes haven't been an issue for the last couple of years so don't be worried too much just keep an emergency kit with water and things like that as that what we do. Foreclosures are not as bad as they seem because according to another poster banks in Florida are slow to get them off the market. Lastly traffic wouldn't be anything your not use to so I wouldn't be too worried about that as you come from Pittsburgh so I don't think it would as heavy.

There's a lot of foreclosures FL is still like #1 or 2.... because we experienced the worst of the housing bubble. Houses sky-rocketing value only to crash....and people took out mortgages that were more then the house's worth...

Traffic in Boca and Delray are nothing like in Pittsburgh.
It's more highways and multi-lane roads then bridges and tunnels....ie, just newer and more car-friendly overall, albeit traffic is pretty congested at peek times. Nothing to worry about tho IMO..

Also job market is decent depending on the industry. Service based economy mostly... landscaping would be good, but ur husband would absolutely need to know Spanish to work in that industry down here.

Best of luck
