Snow is becoming unbearable in the northeast… not looking forward to the winter. Plus, summer is no better with heat and frequent thunderstorm. I am thinking of relocating to Florida in late 2016 to a gated retirement community in Palm Beach County or in Deerfield Beach.
I am an active, healthy 64 retired female teacher, and plan to continue contributing to the greater external community wherever I live through volunteerism. My lifestyle includes, but not limited to: - education, aquatic, fitness, theatre, enjoy learning, reading, and when budget allows…traveling. I hope that I can live within driving distance to good shopping, city entertainment and a church…preferably a Baptist Church.
My budget is about $175,000.00 to buy a home (Villa or 2-story town-home) with 1 garage in a community built after year 2000 with space to accommodate family or friends when they visit.
I have read so many negatives about Florida retirement communities, that I am feeling uneasy about my plan; therefore, I will welcome your suggestions, comments on the pro and con of a retirement community in Palm Beach and Deerfield Beach from those of you with FACTUAL experience about these communities.
I plan to visit Southeast Florida within a few months; can you please recommend a few communities in Palm Beach County and in Deerfield Beach that I may visit. Thank you.

My parents live in Century Village, Deerfield Beach, and love it. I've visited a lot and now live nearby and it is really nice. The property is kept up very well. Apartments are fairly big and inexpensive. Pools are nice and there are gym classes and regular classes. They are really happy about it. I don't really like the surrounding area however.

Solo, my BIL is in Spanish Lakes in Port St. Lucie. They LOVE it, and the nicest model home is only 100K. There is a HOA fee but it's reasonable, and since you only own the house and not the land taxes are less than 1K per year.

I know someone there in Century Village in Deerfield and visited her before. The place seem awful small, like less than 800sq. She lived near the entrance where there was numerous of steps to get to the 2nd floor. Not sure if your parents are in the small building, but just mentioning it cause you may know about it. The 2nd time I went to see her, I went to the office too and they seem like they have a lot of activities and tranportation for the folks there too.

My parents' place is pretty big--over 900 sq. feet. They renovated and it's beautiful. They're really happy there. It's a lot nicer from inside the grounds. I think people have the wrong impression about it.

This lady's was not renovated and was dark inside with dark furniture and etc. Seem small, but I was only in the main room.
