As another poster said, you really need to come down short term.

Don't just do the beach-vacation type things.

Drive during rush hour, scout/stalk neighborhoods you're interested in, go grocery shopping...

Look at it from a day to day point of view.

Default Pros/ Cons to life in Boca Raton

The Cons with the Pros;1) Traffic on 95 is like the Daytona Speedway, secondary routes are also congested, stay East of 95 if possible, pick a location you can walk to stores, etc. 2)Hot Humid weather, well it is S.Fl. if you're close to the beach or at the beach you may enjoy it. Everything is air conditioned so for me not a problem. Moisture in the air is great for the skin they say unlike Arizona for example. 3) Too much shopping, every department store worth a hoot is here, wife loves it, so do I actually. 4)Beaches,way too beautiful, as a resident I get a beach pass for parking, compared to Ft Lauderdale you may dose off while at the beach. 5) Amenities, too many to count, Awesome Library, recreation activities, golf, restaurants, etc 6) Cost of living, Too low, everybody is moving here. I've been here thru the boom of 2004 and bust a few yrs later. Many of the fly by nighters moved on. Prices are starting to rise again but still a bargain for what you get. 7) Schools, again, too good, Draws families that cause crowding, just kidding of course, love families smart enough to move here.8) Location, I have to drive 30/ 40 miles for Pro Baseball, Football, Basketball,Hockey, Horse racing, casinos, Airports, etc.ohh the humanity. 9) No snow, you're below the Gulfstream so Temps always above freezing that I know of 9) 1 Hurricane in 10 yrs, rumors predicted 2/3 a year? They have more Weather Issues in Kansas, midwest, etc. No doubt potential is here a few months a year but unless you live on the beachfront you have better things to worry about. 10) I did years of research before buying here 12 yrs ago, still very happy with Boca. Safe, well run piece of paradise. But please don't take my word for it, keep looking, and looking,...

I lived in south Florida for 25 years. It was a huge adjustment at the beginning coming from NYC. It's very hot and humid, I always thought it was transient and the people (imo, in Boca ) are pretentious and very materialistic.

I'm a New Yorker and have lived in many States and even overseas.. I can tell you...

1. I HATE LA Northern California is different nicer, better, etc..

2. Lived in Las Vegas, Yes it's a dry heat. .big joke.. you still can't spend much time out there in that heat.. I have photos of it registering at 125 degrees. Couldn't wait to get out of there.. you talk transient, you ain't seen nothing yet till you live in Vegas.. . but wait there's more.

3. Arizona - Phoenix area.. I actually like it way more than most places but I have a photo of the "dry heat" registered at 135 degrees ... Arizona has fantastic places to visit and you can actually drive 40 minutes and have a drop in temps by 60 degrees.. Prescott and Flagstaff.. I liked Arizona.

4. Massachusetts otherwise known as TAXachusetts... living in the snow belt of Berkshire County made me seriously swear off snow.. Play in it, yes, Shove it at 4:30 in the AM to be able to get to work.. not for me anymore!

But Florida... My LA Husband hates the humidity.. I don't mind it.. when you survive an August in NYC you can survive any humidity anywhere in the world.

I like my neighborhood GREEN and I don't mean money!! .. I am so over dust and desert.

I guess Colorado or Washington State, Oregon, could be nice but only certain times of the year.

I'm happy in FLA and seriously don't plan on going anywhere except on a cruise.. and guess what.. no luggage weight restrictions to get to the ship!!!

I never had a problem with the people, except down in Miami cause I don't speak the language!!!!!

Yes, but that's because you live in BOCA.. where many New Yorkers have moved...

I call it... little NY... actually.

It's hot and humid.
It's got lots of 'people turnover'.
You want southern hospitality, go someplace else.
PBC is not called The Sixth Borough for nothing.

And, to paraphrase Yogi, it's also getting VERY crowded so no one goes there any more!

I'm originally from NY and have lived in FL for about 20 years. I moved back to NY 2.5 years ago, but am now looking to move back to the Boca/Delray area. Overall, I really like Florida. It does get humid--but so does NY in the summer. Honestly, NYC summers are way worse than FL! At least in FL everyone has central air. And in FL you get a really good breeze and a daily 30 minute rain shower to cool things down. In that sense, the FL weather is so much better than the NY weather. Plus, you'll never have to shovel snow!

I think of FL has having two different types of people: the transients and the NY/NJ people. I typically don't associate with the transients. But, as I said there are a lot of people from NY and NJ and those are the people I become friends with. Nearly everyone in Boca seems to be from NY/NJ, so it kinda feels like home. haha. People are usually nice. But there are the occasional snobs you run into. I do my best to ignore them. For the most part, I think it is a mixed bag--very similar to NY.

As a recruiter.. I read resumes across the country all day and definitely see this.
Hi,
You mentioned that you are a recruiter. I'm planning to move to Boynton/Delray area. How is the IT market there? I'm a Sr. Software Developer (Asp.Net).

Thanks!

We recruit nationwide, mostly for UTC.
At this point we don't get too many jobs in Florida, but a couple of their divisions are slowly moving more of their operations to the Jupiter area.
Sorry thats all the help I can offer.

Do you check the Indeed website?

Steer clear of Boynton. Almost wall to wall ghetto with a few pockets of nice. Delray and Boca are the opposite, Mostly good areas with pockets best avoided.

South Florida and Palm Beach County are as friendly as you want it to be. Excluding traffic woes, as earlier stated. It takes friendly people to make friends, meaning you have to work at it. It just doesn't happen automatically.
