Well I don't know how carefully you read my post, but up until only two months ago, my mother had traditional, old school, plug into the wall jack landline service. But what you're saying is probably the reason the price is so absurd - there's virtually no competition if that's what you want. It does have one thing going for it - it'll be the last thing to go in a hurricane.

2 wire, DSL line also has a 48V ringer. Also may run on headend battery pile. Wife wanted a traditional phone for many years. Finally convince DW that we only got junk calls on the 2 wire, and all our calls in/out was on cell phones. 2 wire phone and high-speed data/internet was costing us +$120/mm, 5yrs ago. Plus cost for our mobile/data phones.

Back in '04 after Francis & Jeanne our POTS line was the only thing working, I suspect now the cell towers are much more "hardened" but .....
