We know there are many northerners with a second home in FL, that clear out of FL for the summer. Is it common (or rare, or allowed) for people to rent out their place for the summer? Is there a source to find such rentals? I'm considering a permanent move down there, and renting for the summer seems like a good idea for a trial run.

Yes, and it's generally a cheaper rate than during the winter because it's considered off-season, though rentals do seem to pick up again around the summer holidays. You can find rentals on sites like VRBO, Airbnb, etc. You might also want to check with local real estate agents that have a property management component to their business as a lot of times people will buy homes here in FL and put them into rental pools right away using the same agent they bought with.

It’s very common and I agree a good way to see if you like FL. In the past you could find a really nice rental for a fraction of in season cost. I’m not sure with Covid and people wanting to come to FL or snowbirds staying later if it is as easy

Could be difficult because I know our HOA does not allow short term rentals. It must be no less that 6 months. You could check Air BnB or VRBO for summer rentals.

That shouldn't be too difficult. Many snowbirds spend May to November (give or take) up north.
