What can you tell me about Columbia Hospital in WPB? My husband is considering a residency program there.

Where would one live if worked at Columbia Hospital for fast commute, but neighborhoods with good elementary school zones? We have 2 small children that will need good and safe elementary schools.

I'm also a certified elementary teacher that may work if I can find a job in this economy...so good school district and safe neighborhoods a must! Oh, and residents do not get paid much so not too pricey of neighborhoods if that's possible in WPB!

Any information is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Try the "South of Southern" neighborhood in West Palm Beach, which is zoned for Olive Elementary, which is a well rated school.

Also, I believe one of the historic neighborhoods in downtown is zoned for Palm Beach Public School, but ask a realtor to confirm that one.

What is your price range? Jupiter is known to have a good public school system, but the rents can be pricey, depending on wherein you live. There aren't any neighborhoods in the immediate general vicinity of Columbia that I would recommend.

Not sure on price range. As I'd like to stay under $1500 a month if rented or a mortgage payment. The lower the better, but understand that WPB is expensive and will pay for better areas. With one income, money is going to be tight. Do you recommend any good apartments/townhomes/condo's to rent for families?
Thanks!

Hmmm..... if you are willing to commute 15 - 20 minutes, I would recommend Jupiter, which is an upscale suburb of West Palm Beach. For $1500/month, you can find 3 bedroom townhomes in Abacoa (a subdivision of Jupiter that has a lot of families), as well as single family homes in other parts of Jupiter.

The Somerset and Antigua sections of Abacoa appear to be your best bet for 3 bedroom townhomes at or below 1500/month:

Somerset:

Beautiful 3/2.1/2 w/ 2+ car garage in Somerset (Abacoa) near everythin (http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/apa/1094921033.html - broken link)

Antigua:

Also, across the street there is Botanica:

TriMT7, Thank you so much! I like all of these townhomes and I feel that is probably the best bet for us since the residency will only be for 3-4 years. My husband would also be working in a hospital in Port St. Lucie. Do you know how far away that would be from those areas; Jupiter, etc? Maybe living in between the 2 hospitals will be the best bet for us. Having a safe environment and good schools is the most important at this point in our lives. What county would I look for the elementary district?

Thanks for the help! He has an interview on April 21st. Send some prayers up if you're the praying kind !

If he will be commuting to BOTH a Port St. Lucie hospital, AND Columbia in West Palm Beach, then Jupiter is probably your best bet. Jupiter is 1/2 hour from Port St. Lucie, though if he's working at Port St. Lucie Medical Center (or whatever it's called these days) East of US-1 in PSL, it will be a longer commute once he gets off the highway, cause he'll have to schlep to the Eastern part of the city, which can take a while.

Jupiter is in Palm Beach County. It's (Jupiter) schools are rated a "10" on Greatschools.net, and are basically "A" rated. It's why there are so many families in Jupiter.

Palm City in Martin County may also be an option if he will be commuting to both a PSL hospital and a West Palm Beach hospital. Martin County has good schools (also majority A rated), and if you live near the highway the commute will be cut down.

My secretary lives in Palm City and makes the daily trek -- 45 minutes each way.
